ART DECO ARCHITECTURE

Rockefeller Center. The Daily News Building. Vertical setbacks & crisp and clear lines.
The Chrysler and Empire State Buildings. Symmetry and friezes.

Not only was Art Deco the first original type of American architecture (Europe, we done with you!) but it was also abhorred by New Yorkers when it came of age in the 20s and 30s. Now universally beloved, learn how we discovered the promise of the future and the limitlessness of humanity in the details of these buildings. By the end of the tour you’ll spot rectangular geometric forms arranged and broken up by curved ornamental elements from a mile away!

Sites include:

  • Chrysler Building (interior available on weekdays)

  • Empire State Building lobby

  • Daily News Building (interior available on weekdays)

  • American Radiator Building (exterior only)

  • Rockefeller Center (interior)

  • If time permits we’ll head downtown for glimpses of 1 Wall Street, 40 Wall Street & 70 Pine Street
